Scotland and Wales have their own taxes.
SDLT usually applies when
- You buy a home for more than £125,000 (or more than £300,000 with first-time buyer relief)
- You buy an additional home for £40,000 or more
- You buy commercial or mixed-use property for more than £150,000
- You give something of value in exchange for property, not just cash
- You take over a mortgage or debt as part of a transfer
SDLT usually doesn't apply when
- The price is below the relevant threshold
- You inherit property under a will or intestacy
- Property is given as a gift with no payment and no mortgage taken over
- Property is transferred under a divorce or dissolution court order or agreement
Each of these has conditions. For example, taking over a share of a mortgage on a gift can make it taxable. See special cases and exemptions.
A return may be needed even when no tax is due. See filing deadlines.
